Success with racing pigeons in breeding and racing, starts with good health. Assuming you have good pigeons,
I would like to address, how to achieve and maintain good health.
Before breeding and racing, all pigeons should go through a regular health maintenance program, to make sure
that they are totally "clean," and they do not have the slightest chance of carrying a contagious virus or bacteria. We at Global feel we have a health maintenance program, that if followed on a regular basis along with some common sense precautions, will keep your pigeons healthy year around. This program consist of medications, vaccines, vitamins, both domestic and foreign and when administered during several strategic periods of the year, we found it to be very effective.
BEFORE BREEDING AND RACING (Approx. 6 to 8 Weeks)
Vaccinate all pigeons for PARATYPHOID and PARAMYXOVIRUS (Use Sal-Bac and PMV-1). Some say it is all-right to do these vaccination at the same time, however I recommend not to do this, as it is much to hard on the pigeons. For those who do not like to vaccinate, we offer the following alternatives. For PARATYPHOID, give the pigeons DAC FURALTADONE in the water for 10 - 14 days. For PARAMYXOVIRUS use LASOTA in the water for
1 day only. LASOTA will give the pigeons a short-time immunity and should be repeated every 6 to 8 weeks. Many fanciers feel there is no need to vaccinate for POX, but we highly recommend it. Vaccinate your young birds only, with the pox vaccine from (Lohmann) this is a brush-on type vaccine and this may be done at the same time when vaccination for PARAMYXOVIRUS. After medicating, vaccinating, stress or sickness a good pro-biotic should be given in the water or over the feed for two days. There are several good ones on the market, such as: ENTERO-EXTRA (Global), PRO-BIOLEC (Belga-Vet), PRO-DIGEST (Herbots) or PROBIUS. This is to restore the "Natural" gut bacteria destroyed by medicating, vaccinating, stress etc. This is necessary for the proper digestion of the feed and to maintain balance in the digestive system. Vitamins may be given at the same time as the pro-biotic, ENTERO-EXTRA (Global) is a pro-biotic, that is supported with a whole series of vitamins.
We highly recommend one of the newer GLOBAL products, that has really taking off MULTI-VIT MINERAL GRIT.
This is a mixture of all types of grit, mineral powder, P40 pellets, Tovo, Candy Feed, Egg White, Grape Sugar and
more, fortified with vitamins. The pigeons really go crazy over this product, as they seem to get addicted to it.
FOUR WEEKS BEFORE RACING
Five (5) Days of MULTI-MIX (Global) against (CANKER-COCCIDIOSIS-WORMS) or DACOXINE 4 in 1 (DAC)
against (CANKER-COCCI-PARATYPHOID-E-COLI). After treatment give two (2) days of pro-biotic ENTERO-EXTRA (Global). Continue to give the pigeons vitamins once or twice a week throughout the breeding and racing periods.
RESPIRATORY TREATMENT (2 Weeks before the races)
It may be a good idea at this point, to give the pigeons a respiratory treatment. This can be done with the following products: TYLOSINE (DAC), 1+1 CURE (Broomhexine & Doxycycline) (DAC), LS-5O, AUREOMYCIN CONCENTRATE or SPIRADAC (Suanovil) (DAC) or use one of GLOBAL'S most successful products RESPIRATORY PLUS. We found that TYLOSINE (DAC) mixed with AUREOMYCIN CONCENTRATE also to be very effective. We recommend, that SPIRADAC (Suanovil) (DAC) is very effective, if given every two weeks during the racing season, it will not harm condition. For mucus in the throat, we recommend BROOMHEXINE (DAC), the day before basketing, many that have used it, feel it gives the birds a boost.
ONE (1) WEEK BEFORE RACING
Three (3) days of MULTI-MIX (Global) and one (1) day of pro-biotic, ENTERO-EXTRA (Global) or any of the
previously mentioned pro-biotics. GLOBAL'S MULTI-MIX may be given every two week for 1 or 2 days, during the
racing season, as it will not harm condition, preferably on the Monday after the race.
ADDITIONAL BENEFICIAL HEALTH PRODUCTS
There are many health products on the market that when given on a regular basis, can help your pigeons maintain excellent health. One of these products is a VITA-MINERAL powder, made by (BEYERS, VANHEE, NATURAL and GLOBAL) We keep a small pot in front of our birds during the breeding and racing season. We place it in the middle of the grit container, and when the birds feel the need they consume it. Believe me it works!! Other great products, are the pick-stones, (NATURAL-VANHEE-BEYERS-GLOBAL) they come in block form or in a clay pot, this could be a substitute for grit, but we give it in addition to. These are made from a clay base, and are very high in many assorted minerals. Another great mineral product on the market, is GLOBAL'S BOUNTY, this product contains 40+ minerals, and can be given to the birds once a week, year around. One product we will not do without, is GLOBAL'S LUGOLS. This products is formulated from a high percentage iodine and is perfectly safe to give, on a weekly basis as directed. Benefits are that it improves hatchability and it stimulates the thyroid gland, that provides a hormone called "Thyroxine" essential for body and mental development. A very good switch with GLOBAL'S LUGOLS would be CLINEE-TRIL this is an excellent product that will help the pigeons maintain the biological balance in the intestines and the digestive tract. Those that use this product, rave about it.
Other products regularly used by us, are GARLIC OIL and GARLIC JUICE, we prefer the oil and use a teaspoon over a pound of feed, to which we add BREWERS YEAST powder. For those that don't want the mixing mess, they use the GARLIC JUICE in the water, and supplement their feed with a handful of P40 PELLETS . We sell GARLIC OIL from (NATURAL), but now we have our own GLOBAL'S GARLIC OIL, fortified it with a whole range of vitamins. The same goes for the GARLIC JUICE, we sell the juice from (VANHEE ), but now also have our own GLOBAL'S GARLIC JUICE, again fortified with a whole range of beneficial vitamins. I actually believe, we have a superior product over what we import. Many more excellent products are available, and we could go on and on recommending these products, however it is up to the individual to develop his own health program, that will fit his or her budget. Although we have these products and other more expensive ones readily available, for us the above program works, and you to can obtain these results at a very moderate cost. If you want to be on top of the sheet when racing, start with GOOD HEALTH.
